Zoë Chowney is a contemporary artist based in Hermanus, South Africa, known for her innovative and multidisciplinary approach. Her work spans across jewellery, sculpture, painting, and drawing, consistently exploring themes of identity, transformation, and the relationship between the organic and the industrial.

Through her collaboration with the Hippo Boutique Hotel, these works are moved out of the traditional gallery and into a living space, allowing guests to experience her sophisticated aesthetic as an integral part of their stay.

From Academic Rigor to Artistic Freedom

Zoë Chowney was born in South Africa, where she developed her passion for art from a young age. She honed her craft at Stellenbosch University, earning both a BA and an MA in Visual Arts, where she delved into the exploration of form, material, and meaning. Inspired by the natural world and the emotional connections between objects and people, Zoë's work bridges the gap between fine and wearable art, blending academic rigor with intuitive creativity to create pieces with powerful personal significance.

A central pillar of Zoë’s current portfolio is her immersive collaboration with Hippo Boutique Hotel.

Rather than viewing art from a distance, guests are invited to live alongside it. Her distinctive pieces are curated throughout the property, featuring bold paintings that anchor the atmosphere of our rooms, alongside intricate sculptures and mixed-media works displayed in the communal lounges and corridors.

Each piece invites a closer look at her fascination with texture and organic narrative. While Zoë’s art has been celebrated at prestigious venues like the Marvol Gallery and Ataraxia Vineyard, this resident collection offers a uniquely intimate way to engage with her creativity.
