And, if you’re keen to whale-watch without straying too far from the Mother City, you’re in luck! Along the Cape Town stretch of the route, there are numerous viewing spots.

Every year from June to December, whales make their journey to our shores for mating and calving. The peak season from August to October, presents an incredible opportunity for both locals and visitors to observe these magnificent creatures up close. So, whether you prefer a boat tour, watching whales from the coastline, or even spotting them from a cliffside vantage point there’s a whale watching adventure waiting for you.

Take a coastal walk

Explore the trails around Cape Town, such as the Atlantic Seaboard or Chapman’s Peak, for a chance to spot whales as you enjoy a leisurely walk. These paths provide incredible panoramic views of the ocean. Scan the horizon for any signs of activity and keep your binoculars handy for a closer look.

Book a reputable boat tour

Various companies offer guided tours that take you to prime whale-watching spots, with knowledgeable guides providing insights into whale behaviour and habits. Choose a reputable company that follows sustainable practices, staying at least 300 metres from the whales to avoid causing stress or altering their natural behaviour.

False Bay whale watching hotspot

Located on the eastern side of the Cape peninsula, False Bay’s sheltered waters attract Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales, and Bryde’s Whales. Take a drive along the coastline, stop at vantage points like Clarence Drive or Boyes Drive and keep your camera ready as you might spot dolphins or seals frolicking in the bay.

Cape Point scenic nature reserve

Cape Point at the southwestern tip of the Cape Peninsula provides a dramatic whale-watching backdrop. Standing on the rugged cliff top, you can witness whales swimming through the deep blue waters. Keep an eye out for their breaching behaviour as they leap out of the water and crash down in a breathtaking display of power and grace.

Visit Hermanus, South Africa’s whale watching capital

The charming coastal town of Hermanus is a two-hour drive from Cape Town. From June to November, Southern Right Whales gather in Walker Bay, showcasing their playful behaviours. The town provides several lookout points and designated whale-watching areas, including the famous Cliff Path, where you can observe these gentle giants from land. You can also take a guided boat tour from the harbour.

Each location offers a unique and magical encounter with these magnificent creatures. So, next time you’re in Cape Town, be sure to include a whale watching adventure in your itinerary.
